Background

Dr. Michael McClintock Jr. grew up in a small town in Kentucky where his father was an ophthalmologist and his mother worked in the office. As a child, he spent a lot of time there and that firsthand exposure led him to believe that medical school would be a good fit for him. That turned out to be true. He graduated first in his class at the University of Louisville School of Medicine.

He enjoys ophthalmology and his retina specialty in particular, for its nice mix of surgery, technology, and patient interaction.

“We see some really sick people and that sense of knowing you are saving someone’s sight makes me grateful every day that I chose this profession.”

Dr. McClintock serves each patient using an approach that emphasizes honest communication.

“My mission is to provide quality, compassionate, state-of-the-art retinal health care to the people of southwest Virginia. I strive to take the time to talk to, educate and inform patients about their condition and integrate their needs and desires into an appropriate plan of care.”

Outside of the office Dr. McClintock builds computers, plays tennis, and hikes. But, most of all, he enjoys spending time with his young family and eagerly anticipates the day when his sons will be old enough to hike with him.
